Welcome to Who’s Who in the Bible. Today, we’ll take an overview of the life of Apollos, an early Christian preacher who played a significant role in the early Church.
Apollos is a notable figure in the New Testament, recognised for his eloquent preaching and deep understanding of the Scriptures. His contributions to the early Christian movement were significant, reflecting the dynamic growth of the Church during its formative years.
Apollos was a Jew from Alexandria, an influential city in Egypt known for its scholarly pursuits (Acts 18:24). He was described as 'an eloquent man, well-versed in the Scriptures' (Acts 18:24). His background as an educated man provided him with a deep understanding of Jewish law and prophecy, which he later applied to proclaim the message of Jesus Christ.
Apollos arrived in Ephesus and began to speak boldly in the synagogue, teaching about Jesus with great fervour (Acts 18:26). Although he was knowledgeable about Jesus, he initially only knew the baptism of John, which focused on repentance rather than the full gospel of Jesus Christ. Priscilla and Aquila, a Christian couple, took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately, introducing him to the teachings about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and the full message of the Gospel (Acts 18:26).
After being instructed more fully, Apollos continued his ministry with renewed vigour. He travelled to Achaia, where he greatly helped those who had believed through grace (Acts 18:27). Apollos’ powerful preaching and persuasive arguments about Jesus led many to faith in Corinth, where he became a prominent figure in the church. His work there was instrumental in building up the early Christian community.
Apollos’s impact was so profound that Paul later referenced him in his letters to the Corinthians. Paul acknowledged Apollos’ role in planting and watering the seeds of faith, emphasising that while Apollos and Paul had different roles, it was ultimately God who gave the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6). Apollos’ ministry exemplified the collaborative nature of the early Church’s efforts in spreading the Gospel.
Apollos’ story highlights the importance of continued growth and learning in the Christian faith. His willingness to receive further instruction and his effective teaching reflect the transformative power of a life dedicated to proclaiming Christ.
