Diotrephes

Diotrephes is mentioned in 3 John as a negative example of leadership within the early church. He is described as someone who loved to be first, refused to welcome fellow believers, and rejected the authority of the apostle John. Diotrephes not only spoke maliciously against church leaders but also prevented others from showing hospitality, even expelling those who did. His actions reveal how pride, ambition, and a desire for control can damage Christian community and unity. Diotrephes serves as a cautionary figure, warning against self-centred leadership and reminding readers that true Christian authority is marked by humility, love, and faithfulness to truth.

Welcome to Who’s Who in the Bible. Today, we’ll take an overview of Diotrephes, a man mentioned in the New Testament whose actions brought division to his church community.

[INTRO FILM]
Diotrephes is mentioned only briefly in the short letter of 3 John, yet his example is memorable — not for faithfulness, but for behaviour that stood in contrast to the humility and love expected of Christian leaders."
[Transition to scenes of the early church]
In 3 John 9–10, the Apostle John describes Diotrephes as someone who 'loves to be first' and refuses to acknowledge John’s authority. He would not welcome John’s travelling representatives, spoke against them, and even stopped others from offering them hospitality. In some cases, he went as far as putting people out of the church who wished to help."
[Transition to scenes depicting conflict within the church]
Diotrephes’ actions show that even in the earliest days of the church, pride and self-interest could cause division. His example stands as a warning that service in the church must be rooted in service, humility, and submission to Christ, rather than in personal control or status."
[Transition to scenes of John’s encouragement to believers]
In the same letter, John urges believers not to imitate what is evil but to follow what is good (3 John 11). By pointing to Diotrephes’ behaviour, John reinforces the importance of welcoming and supporting true servants of God, and of protecting the fellowship of the church from harmful attitudes."
[Closing reflection]
So what’s significant about Diotrephes? His short but striking mention in Scripture reminds us that service without humility can damage the witness of the church. His story challenges us to value love, service, and truth over position or personal ambition."
To learn more about Diotrephes and the lessons from his example, read the Third Letter of John, which offers practical wisdom for Christian fellowship and leadership."
