Epaphras

Epaphras was a devoted servant of Christ and a close co-worker of the apostle Paul, closely associated with the church in Colossae. He is credited with first bringing the gospel to the Colossians and is described by Paul as a faithful minister and a man deeply committed to prayer. Epaphras is especially noted for “wrestling in prayer” on behalf of believers, praying that they would stand firm, mature, and fully assured in God’s will (Colossians 4:12). At the time of Paul’s imprisonment, Epaphras was with him, sharing in his ministry and, at one point, his captivity. Epaphras’ life reflects quiet faithfulness, pastoral care, and the powerful role of persistent prayer in strengthening the church.

Epaphras is a lesser-known figure in the New Testament, but the Bible gives us a glimpse into his ministry and devotion. He is mentioned in Paul’s letters as a beloved fellow servant and a faithful minister of Christ on behalf of the believers in Colossae (Colossians 1:7)."
[Transition to scenes of early church gatherings]
It’s likely that Epaphras first heard the gospel through Paul’s teaching and then carried the message to his own people. Paul speaks of him as someone who has worked hard for the believers in Colossae, Laodicea, and Hierapolis (Colossians 4:13), showing his heart for nearby communities and his desire for them to grow strong in faith."
[Transition to scenes of Epaphras praying]
One of the most striking things we learn about Epaphras is his prayer life. Paul describes him as ‘always wrestling in prayer’ for the believers, that they may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured (Colossians 4:12). His ministry wasn’t just about activity—it was deeply rooted in intercession and care for others’ spiritual growth."
[Transition to scenes of Paul writing letters]
In the letter to Philemon, Paul refers to Epaphras as his ‘fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus’
(Philemon 1:23). Though we don’t know the details, this shows that Epaphras faced hardship for the sake of the gospel, yet remained faithful."
[Closing reflection]
So what’s so special about Epaphras? While not a prominent biblical figure, his example of faithfulness, hard work, and prayer is timeless. His story reminds us that God values those who serve quietly yet faithfully in the background, labouring in prayer and care for His people."
To learn more about Epaphras, take time to read Paul’s letters—especially Colossians and Philemon—and see how his name appears as a quiet but shining example of service."
