Hagar

Hagar is a significant yet often overlooked figure in the Old Testament. As Sarah's maidservant, she was drawn into the unfolding of God's plan for Abraham’s descendants, becoming the mother of Ishmael, the forefather of many nations. Hagar’s story is one of struggle, survival, and a unique encounter with God, who saw her in her deepest moment of need.

Hagar’s story begins in Genesis when Sarah, Abraham’s wife, was unable to conceive a child. In her desperation, Sarah gave her maidservant Hagar to Abraham as a surrogate mother, hoping to build a family through her (Genesis 16:1-3). This arrangement, however, soon led to tension. After Hagar became pregnant, conflict arose between her and Sarah, with Hagar being treated harshly, causing her to flee into the wilderness (Genesis 16:4-6).

In the wilderness, Hagar experienced a divine encounter that changed her life. The angel of the Lord appeared to her near a spring of water and assured her that God had heard her affliction. He instructed her to return to Sarah and Abraham, promising that her son, Ishmael, would also become the father of a great nation (Genesis 16:7-10). Moved by this encounter, Hagar called God 'El Roi,' meaning 'the God who sees me' (Genesis 16:13), recognizing that even in her lowest moment, God was watching over her.

Hagar returned and gave birth to Ishmael, Abraham’s first son. However, years later, after Sarah miraculously gave birth to Isaac, tensions resurfaced. At Sarah’s urging, Hagar and Ishmael were sent away (Genesis 21:9-14). Once again in the wilderness, Hagar found herself in despair, but God intervened a second time. The angel of the Lord provided water for her and Ishmael and reassured her of the promises concerning her son (Genesis 21:17-19).

Hagar’s story highlights God’s compassion and faithfulness to those who feel abandoned and mistreated. Despite the difficult circumstances, God revealed Himself to Hagar, offering her comfort and hope. Through Ishmael, Hagar became the matriarch of a great people. Hagar’s legacy is one of endurance, faith, and a reminder that God sees and cares for the marginalised.

So what’s so special about Hagar? Hagar’s life reflects the truth that no one is outside of God’s care or notice. In her moments of deepest need, she encountered the God who saw her pain and provided for her. Hagar’s story reminds us that God is always present, even in the wilderness seasons of our lives, offering hope and redemption.
