Welcome to Who's Who in the Bible. Today, we’ll take an overview of the life of Moses, a central figure in Judeo-Christian theology, revered as a prophet, lawgiver, and leader.
Moses lived during a pivotal period in ancient history, approximately 3,500 years ago, in Egypt and the wilderness of Sinai. His birth, protected by divine intervention, marked the beginning of a remarkable journey ordained by God.
The story of Moses begins with a spectacular divine intervention. Amidst the oppression of the Israelites in Egypt, Moses was born to a Levite family, but his life took an unexpected turn when his mother, seeking to save him from Pharaoh's decree to kill Hebrew male infants, placed him in a basket on the Nile River (Exodus 2:1-10).
Miraculously, Moses was discovered by Pharaoh's daughter, who raised him as her own son in the royal court of Egypt (Exodus 2:5-10). Thus, Moses grew up in the midst of wealth and privilege, yet he remained aware of his Hebrew heritage. This upbringing provided him with a unique perspective and education that would later shape his role as a leader and mediator between the Hebrews and the Egyptians.
