Pontius Pilate

Pontius Pilate was the Roman prefect (governor) of Judea during the time of Jesus’ ministry and crucifixion. As the official responsible for maintaining Roman law and order, he presided over Jesus’ trial after Jewish leaders brought accusations against Him. Although Pilate repeatedly stated that he found no guilt in Jesus worthy of death, he ultimately authorised the crucifixion, yielding to political pressure and fear of unrest. The Gospels portray him as conflicted and hesitant, famously washing his hands to symbolise his attempt to distance himself from responsibility. Pilate’s role highlights the tension between justice and power, and he stands as a sobering reminder of the consequences of choosing political safety over moral conviction.

However, in the face of escalating pressure from the Jewish leaders and the crowd, Pilate yielded to their demands, ultimately condemning Jesus to death by crucifixion."
