Rahab

Rahab was a woman living in the city of Jericho who played a crucial role in Israel’s entry into the Promised Land, as recorded in the Book of Joshua. Though she is described as a prostitute, Rahab recognised the power and authority of the God of Israel and chose to act in faith. When Israelite spies came to Jericho, she hid them from the king’s men and helped them escape, declaring her belief that the Lord had given the land to Israel. Because of her faith and courage, Rahab and her family were spared when Jericho was destroyed. She later became part of Israel and is listed in the genealogy of Jesus, as well as commended in the New Testament as an example of faith expressed through action. Rahab’s story powerfully demonstrates God’s grace, redemption, and willingness to use unexpected people in His purposes.

[Narrator: "Welcome to Who’s Who in the Bible. Today, we’re looking at Rahab—a Canaanite woman from Jericho whose faith led her to side with God’s people."]

[Image of Rahab appears on screen]
"Rahab is introduced in Joshua 2. Though a prostitute and a gentile, she recognised the God of Israel as 'God in heaven above and on earth below.' When two Israelite spies came to Jericho, she hid them from the king’s men, risking her own life to protect them."
[Transition to scenes of the scarlet cord]
"In return, the spies promised safety for her and her family when Israel took the city. She marked her house with a scarlet cord as the sign of protection. When Jericho’s walls fell, Rahab’s household alone was spared."
[Transition to lineage and theological reflection]
"Rahab became part of Israel, marrying Salmon of the tribe of Judah. She was the mother of Boaz, making her an ancestor of King David and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5). Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25 remember her for faith that acted—trusting God and protecting His people."
[Closing reflection]
"So what’s so special about Rahab? Her story shows that God’s mercy reaches to unexpected places. Faith in Him can bring redemption and a place in His purposes."
"You can read her story in Joshua 2 and 6, and see her name in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1."
