Welcome to Who’s Who in the Bible. Today, we’ll take an overview of the life of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, who stands as a powerful example of faith and courage in the face of persecution.

Stephen is an important figure in the New Testament, known for his unwavering faith and his role as the first martyr of the Christian Church. His life and death are pivotal in understanding the early struggles and triumphs of the Church.

Stephen was one of the seven men chosen by the early Church to serve as deacons, responsible for distributing food and managing the resources of the community (Acts 6:1-6). This role was essential in addressing the needs of the growing number of believers and ensuring that everyone was cared for.

Stephen’s impact extended beyond his administrative duties; he was also known for his powerful preaching and performing great wonders and signs among the people (Acts 6:8). His ministry was marked by a deep understanding of the Scriptures and a bold proclamation of the Gospel.

Stephen’s outspoken witness to Jesus Christ eventually led to conflict with certain members of the Jewish religious authorities, who began to argue with him. Unable to withstand his wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke, they falsely accused him of blasphemy against Moses and God (Acts 6:9-14).

Stephen was brought before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, where he delivered a powerful speech recounting the history of Israel and indicting the leaders for resisting the and rejecting Jesus as the Righteous One (Acts 7:1-53). His speech demonstrated his deep knowledge of the Scriptures and his courage to confront the religious authorities.

His speech enraged the council members, leading them to drag him out of the city and stone him (Acts 7:54-58). As he was being stoned, Stephen prayed, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit' and 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them' (Acts 7:59-60). His final words reflected his forgiveness and faith, echoing the mercy and grace of Jesus.

Stephen’s martyrdom is a powerful testament to the strength of his faith and his commitment to Jesus. His willingness to face death for the sake of the Gospel and his prayer for his persecutors serve as a profound example of Christian love and forgiveness.

Stephen’s legacy as the first Christian martyr underscores the cost of discipleship and the enduring power of faith in the face of adversity. His story has inspired countless believers throughout history to remain steadfast in their witness to Christ, even under the threat of persecution. This still happens in many places around the world today
